About Hackathon

The Ellipsis Tech Series 2021 Hackathon challenges participants to develop a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) in teams. It will span a total of 7 days from 26 August to 1 September.

Ellipsis would like to invite our Hackathon Presenting Partner to work with us in designing a problem statement that is relevant to issues in today's world. The problem statement will require teams to incorporate business understanding and technical know-how to develop their solutions. This provides our Presenting Partner with the opportunity to challenge our students with a real-world problem, which the students can utilise their creativity and skills to solve.

Teams will be required to work on their proposed solution using open-source technologies and pitch their solutions to a panel consisting of distinguished representatives from SCIS and the Hackathon Presenting Partner themselves. Finally, the top 10 teams shortlisted will advance to the final round and present their solutions once again in the battle to clinch the top prizes.

Ellipsis Tech Series 2021 Hackathon will be held online.

Yes!

The Problem Statement will be released on 26th August 2021, Thursday, 1400 HRS! Do keep a lookout on your emails for more information.

The pre-Hackathon workshop will allow Participants to familiarize themselves with AWS services prior to Hackathon.

No, the workshop is not compulsory to attend. If you are familiar with AWS services, you can choose not to attend the workshop.

In the interest of fairness, previously developed solutions will not be accepted for submission in this Hackathon. You may not reuse more than 30% of the functional code from a solution you have previously developed. This is to ensure that everyone has a fighting chance to do well and opportunities to learn along the way.

You can participate if you are not able to code but your team should consist of coders who are competent in developing applications or solutions as the final submission requires the submission of a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) of your proposed solution. Some good skills for programmers to have would be the ability to work with RESTful APIs, deploying the solution onto the cloud etc.

The IP for the solution will be owned by the Hackathon’s presenting sponsor, Goldman Sachs. All teams must ensure that they do not infringe upon the intellectual property of other companies when developing their solution.

You can choose to deploy the solution locally on-premise or onto the AWS cloud. We encourage teams to deploy their solutions on the cloud. AWS will be providing teams with credits to their AWS Educate Classroom accounts for use during this Hackathon. Teams may use any of the solutions available on the AWS platform to deploy or architect their application.

This is not allowed as AWS is our official cloud technology partner for this event. AWS’ wide range of cloud services will be more than sufficient for deployment purposes. AWS will be providing each team additional credits to allow for usage of their services beyond the free tier limit.

Teams may use any free open-source APIs that are publicly available (eg, data.gov APIs). Teams may not use any paid APIs or any that are not publicly available. When in doubt, please fill in the Questions and Concerns Form. We however strongly encourage teams to make full use of the APIs provided as they are an integral part of judging.

Please refer to our Hackathon Launch document for the prizes.

You may use any programming language and any open-source frameworks/technologies that are publicly available online such as Spring, Flask etc.

Please fill in our Questions and Concerns Form.
